About Cityread London

Cityreads are community reading campaigns, and have been part of the cultural calendar of other cities around the world for over a decade. By choosing one book for a whole city to read and discuss, Cityreads promote reading for pleasure and build a sense of community.

The chosen book for London for 2012 is Oliver Twist, and the Cityread London campaign is the only one linking London’s libraries to the Charles Dickens bicentenary celebrations. The programme will include a number of high-profile events at iconic venues throughout the capital.

Cityread London promotes the key ideas of reading for pleasure, engaging new library users, enhancing the experience of existing readers, and encouraging people to explore and celebrate London’s history.

Cityread London represents culture for all, with all participating library services developing a programme of reading, children’s activities and local history events using  a variety of formats including ebooks, audiobooks, graphic novels, children’s versions, large print, film and in translation where possible, aimed at encouraging readers at all levels.
